he is still believed to be dead and no longer at large.
INT. VIRGINIA STATE POLICE STATION. DAY
LIEUTENANT TOBY PARKER slumps at his desk. The tie
of his suit is askew. He anxiously runs his fingers through his dishevelled
short brown hair.
On his desk is a picture of a carefree version of himself
and his sister ABIGAIL PARKER. Abigail is depicted smiling happily, her waist
length blonde hair worn in two plaits by her face.
SPECIAL AGENT RORY BENEDICT slams a newspaper on to
Lieutenant Parker’s desk. The headline reads BUZZ KILLER ROCKS VIRGINIA. Special Agent Benedict then slams
another newspaper on top; the headline reads BUZZ KILLER BACK FROM THE DEAD.
SPECIAL AGENT BENEDICT
If I assign you to this case can I trust you to stay
neutral?
Lieutenant
Parker glances at the picture on his desk.
LIEUTENANT PARKER
It has to be a copycat.
SPECIAL AGENT BENEDICT
I hope you’re right Lieutenant, for your sake and Miss
Collins.
Lieutenant
Parker straightens up his tie.
LIEUTENANT PARKER
I’m committed to this case Sir.
EXT.
CRIME SCENE. DAY
Lieutenant
Parker strides purposefully along the gravel into a darkened alley.
The
alley is littered with COPS in suits and FORENSIC SCIENTISTS.
In
the entrance of the alley lies the body of SARAH MELLARK, her once beautiful
face is painfully silenced by a bloody slit across her throat. Her head is
smoothly and precisely shaved.
Lieutenant
Parker bends down next to the body, overcome by emotion he places his head into
his hands.
Lieutenant
Parker pinches the bridge of his nose, takes a deep breath and addresses one of
the suited cops – Lieutenant Davis.
LIEUTENANT PARKER
Same M.O. Throat slit, head shaved. No other visible
markings?
LIEUTENANT DAVIS
There is one difference sir.
Lieutenant
Davis hands Lieutenant Parker a plastic evidence bag, inside it is a white card
with two words printed onto it. EVE
COLLINS.
Lieutenant
Parker drops the arm containing the bag limply to his side.
He
drags his free hand through his hair aggressively, grabbing hold of a clump of it
tightly. He swears under his breath, before taking a deep breath and letting go.
LIEUTENANT DAVIS
That’s her name isn’t it sir.
Lieutenant
Davis makes reluctant eye contact with him.
LIEUTENANT DAVIS
The one that survived.
INT.
VIRGINIA STATE POLICE STATION. DAY
POLICE
OFFICER TONY PACK leans lazily in his seat, slumped onto his desk struggling to
fill out a crossword puzzle. Next to the puzzle is a half-eaten sandwich.
Eve
stands over him with her hands on the desk leaning angrily towards the officer.
EVE
Just let me wait somewhere for him. I’m not leaving
till I’ve spoken to him.
The
police officer sighs and takes a bite of the sandwich leaving a trail of
mayonnaise and crumbs across the desk.
He
hastily scribbles out an answer he’d gotten wrong. Then answers her uninterestedly,
still chewing the mangled remains of his sandwich.
OFFICER PACK
Like I’ve told you Miss Colling he isn’t available.
Eve
sighs and pushes off the table in frustration.
EVE
Collins. Miss Collins.
A
low growl sounds in the back of her throat as she storms past the officer
towards Lieutenant Parker’s empty desk.
Officer
Pack stands up quickly in alarm.
OFFICER PACK
You can’t go back the-
Lieutenant
Parker enters the police station and strides past Officer Pack waving his hand
in a gesture of silence.
He
walks straight up to Eve without hesitation.
EVE
Is it him? The reporters, they’re saying he
threatened me.
Lieutenant
Parker places a comforting hand on Eve’s shoulder.
LIEUTENANT PARKER
I’ll keep you safe Eve, you know I’d never let
anyone hurt you.
Eve
shakes off his hand and closes the remaining gap between them, she takes a deep
breath and asks slowly and calmly pronouncing each word succinctly.
EVE
Protect me from who?
Lieutenant
Parker looks at the floor.
Eve
explodes in outrage at not being answered. Shouting loudly she asks again.
EVE
Is it him?
Several
of the OFFICERS working in the station turn to see what’s happening. Noticing
the disruption Lieutenant Parker gently grabs Eve’s elbow and leads her towards
an interrogation room. Eve allows herself to be lead with a defiant expression shadowing
her face.
INT.
INTERROGATION ROOM. DAY
The
room is silent and still, furnished simply with a large desk and two
uncomfortable looking chairs on each side.
Lieutenant
Parker sits on the desk and runs his fingers through his hair, sticking it up
in messy spikes.
EVE
Well?
LIEUTENANT PARKER
It can’t be him Eve. There’s no way he survived the
fire, you barely did and that was with the help of the hospital.
Eve
wipes at a tear threatening to spill form her eye.
EVE
If I hadn’t woken up.
She
takes a deep breath and attempts to calm herself.
EVE
If I hadn’t heard the buzzing.
Lieutenant
Parker grabs her upper arm softly, stroking it soothingly with his thumb.
LIEUTENANT PARKER
But you did wake up.
He
tilts her head up forcing her to look at him. She sniffles quietly. He smiles at
her affectionately
LIEUTENANT PARKER
You woke up, you fought and you survived Eve
Collins.
Overcome
by emotion he turns away andwalks slowly towards the door of the room.
LIEUTENANT PARKER
You’re the only one that did.
Eve
approaches him carefully placing a tentative hand on his shoulder, she stands
in front of him.
EVE
She could be alive Toby. Abigail could have escaped.
Lieutenant
Parker laughs under his breath and shakes his head.
LIEUTENANT PARKER
How many times do we have to have this argument Eve?
She’s dead. No one escapes him.
Lieutenant
Parker turns away from Eve obviously ending the conversation. She spins him
round, forcing him to confront his emotions. Her voice shaking with
frustration, she argues with him loudly.
EVE
As many times as it takes for you to listen to me Toby.I
escaped. I got away. She could of too.
Eve
risks a glance at Lieutenant Parkers face, soften by the emotion she sees on it
she continues gently.
EVE
They never found a body Toby, just hair, you know that.
You know she cou-
Lieutenant
Parker interrupts solemnly his eyes brimming with tears he’s too afraid to
shed. He replies in a quite voice.
Lieutenant Parker
She’s dead Eve. I’m sorry but you need to accept that
my sister is never coming back.
Eve
opens her mouth to respond, just as Special Agent Benedict knocks on the door.
He
enters the room cautiously and looks around uncomfortably looking for somewhere
to focus his eyes.
SPECIAL AGENT BENEDICT
I’m sorry to interrupt.
Special
Agent Benedict glances up and makes eye contact with an emotional Lieutenant
Parker. He clears his throat before turning to Eve.
SPECIAL AGENT BENEDICT
Miss Collins could you please give
us a moment?
Eve
nods quietly and tucks her hair behind her ear she gives Lieutenant Parker’s should
a last comforting squeeze before slipping out of the room.
Lieutenant
Parker locks his gaze with Special Agent Benedict’s.
SPECIAL AGENT BENEDICT
I’m sorry Toby, they’ve
found another body.
Lieutenant
Parker’s posture straightens up.
SPECIAL AGENT BENEDICT
He left a strip of hair on the body.
Special
Agent Benedict takes a deep breath readying him for the next blows he has to
deliver.
SPECIAL AGENT BENEDICT
They think the hair belongs to
Abigail.
